From my childhood I remember a couple of holidays sitting outside a caravan in the Norfolk sunshine reading the Norwich City season preview or sifting through the Fantasy Football supplement of the Sun newspaper organising my dream team for the season.
These days I don’t get north of the border but I do get to organise a real team!
The last two weeks has been a decent fortnight for organising the new season. Since the league’s AGM the club has arranged six friendlies, put out a side featuring five potential new players for the opening week of Monday Night Football, had the league confirm the divisions and registered 50 players for the new season. In addition I have met with a couple of players from the first team to complete a review of last season, ordered the trophies for the end of season do and have begun the redesign of the club’s website.
Does that seem like a lot? Because we still have our first training session coming up in eight days and I am still working on filling the pre-season calendar, with ideally three more matches to arrange, which will all need referees. The “Transfer Window” has also opened and I suspect that soon we will have new players to sign on.
Earlier today I was leaving the supermarket and with their upbeat music enhancing my mood I spotted the EDP and a front page headline saying, ‘The Season Starts Here’. I walked out into the morning sunshine and it all took me back to being sat at a little table in a Wells caravan park longing for the new football season - and I thought ‘yes it does, bring it on!’.
